It was only just over a decade ago that Coventry City were regularly doing battle with Arsenal in the Premier League, though some well-documented off-field problems have seen the Sky Blues plummet into the third tier. They return to the Emirates in a cup competition for the second time in as many years on Friday, though will hope this FA Cup fourth round match goes rather better than their 6-1 hammering in the League Cup back in 2012.

However, with Arsenal on excellent form so far this season, their chances look slim at best. Arsène Wenger will almost definitely take the opportunity to rotate his squad, though the Premier League leaders have more than enough depth to see off a side currently hovering down in 11th place in League One -- even if Coventry are still unbeaten so far this year.

Arsenal still have a string of injury problems including Aaron Ramsey, Thomas Vermaelen and Mikel Arteta, while this game could come just too soon for striker Nicklas Bendtner. Steven Pressley's Coventry are faring rather better on the injury front, with only striker Callum Wilson set to be sidelined.

The minute our match ended against Villa, I whipped my laptop out and began to write my preview/review. It was extremely scathing, so I decided to immediately delete it.

To give myself time to calm down, and watch the match a second time so I can be more objective.  It has been five days…and I am still livid.

I will always, always, advocate that the most important attribute to a top footballer is not skill, pace or strength, but football intelligence. The ability to read the game. To anticipate your opponents moves. To see when it is time to speed the game up, or slow it down. When to take a player on or when to pass the ball off. Of course, if you combine skill, pace and strength to football intelligence, you have a great, great player. But you can also have a great player without two of the above three. You just have to look at Xabi Alonso.

But then you have Cissokho, who showed against Villa that he has no footballing intelligence at all. Look, I have said before and I still believe you should never isolate a single player in a team sport for not performing well, but in this case, I can not help but single him out. He singled himself out. I mean, with seconds left in the game to try and get the winner, he takes half a minute to take a throw in. He has no footballing intelligence whatsoever, and I hate to say, he is not good enough for Liverpool. And to be honest, (and while we on the subject of left backs) Jose Enrique is not the most intelligent footballer either, but what he does have is determination, stamina and aggression, which (for me at least) goes someway in making up for his lack of a footballing brain.

Another player I would like to single out for a poor performance is Kolo Toure. On at least two occasions, I watched him get beaten by a player or a pass, but then take an evening stroll to get back behind the ball. I sang his praise when he first joined us, but of late, he just does not seem interested.

Steven Gerrard had a shocker of a first half. I don’t believe I have any seen a worse forty five minute display from our skipper in my life. He certainly raised his game in the second half, but the first was still superbly poor. Same with Coutinho. And as for Johnson, for the last 18 months at least, Johnson has been poor. His streak continues.

But lastly, the person who I believe got it wrong the most was Brendan Rodgers. He was like a kid who wanted to play with all his favourite toys at once. He sacrificed defensive cover for more attacking options, which I think is a mistake. A solid defence and keeping a clean sheet means you are three quarters of the way to winning the match. Coutinho has had a poor run of form, and I would say give him a week or two off, to play in the reserves and to get his touches in order. Lucas should have started and he and Gerrard should have screened defence. With the ability of both Suarez and Sturridge up front, they are bound to convert chances more often than not.

Everton did us a huge favour. We cannot keep messing up.

And as for our match against Bournemouth, respectfully, our reserves should be good enough to beat them. I would like to see Suarez rested completely for the game as well as Gerrard, Skrtel, and Henderson. I would like Sturridge to be on the bench if needed, with Aspas up front and Coutinho playing behind him. Midfield of Moses, Luis Alberto, Coady, Ibe and a back four of whom ever we have available. This match should be an easy win for us. Let’s hope we don’t mess it up.

The Los Blancos will be buoyant heading into this game, after La Liga leaders Barcelona and Atletico Madrid suffered draws in their respective matches at the weekend, reducing the gap between themselves and Carlo Ancelotti's side to just one point, heating up the tile race.

"They played each other and we made up two points then. Then, neither of them won yesterday because we are playing in a very competitive league and all matches are difficult to win. You can't always win. It happened with us against Osasuna. A lot of the credit for having cut the gap goes to the team because they have kept fighting in the competition. We improved after the match with Barcelona. We are where we wanted to be when the season started. We are in with a shout in all competitions and are really keen to do well," Ancelotti pointed out in his pre-match press conference.

Real have won all six of its games played in 2014 and are the only La Liga side to do so. However, the Italian tactician stressed there is no room for complacency for Real even in the Copa games and insisted Espanyol are a strong side. The two clubs had met each other at the Cornella-El Prat in La Liga last month; a match that the Meringues won 1-0, thanks to a headed goal by centre-back Pepe.

"Espanyol are a good team and are very well organised. They are a physically strong team and there will be a high intensity in the match. They will do everything to try to win and getting a good result in the first leg would make their job easier". We have to play well. I was happy with how we did against them in La Liga. As good as Manchester City were, however—as they lived up to their record this season of averaging four goals a game at home—West Ham were equally if not even more abject, producing the second awful cup performance in four days following Sunday’s 5-0 loss against Championship side Nottingham Forest.

"Today was an important result for us," Pellegrini noted afterwards to Sky Sports. "Today we have one leg in the final.

"The most important thing was not to score the six goals, but it was the way this team played. If we continue to play this way, then the goals will come."

Pellegrini named a strong side for the tie, with the presence of the likes of Toure, Vincent Kompany, David Silva and Pablo Zabaleta suggesting he did not want to risk a repeat of the surprise loss that afflicted rivals Manchester United in the first leg of the other semi-final 24 hours earlier.

His opposite number wasn't afforded quite so many luxuries, however, with Sam Allardyce feeling forced to throw loan signing Roger Johnson straight in for an immediate debut alongside George McCartney in a makeshift centre-back pairing that did not inspire confidence.

It was to be a selection decision that would not work out.

Allardyce had suggested before kick-off that a draw would constitute a good result for the Hammers, but to the manager’s likely dismay, his side were behind after just 12 minutes and never really looked like they would recover.

It was Negredo who broke the deadlock, the Spaniard stealing in between McCartney and Joey O’Brien to volley home Toure’s long ball over the top in one fluid movement.

Fourteen minutes later it was 2-0, with Negredo again the player celebrating. This time it was he and strike partner Dzeko who combined, the Bosnia and Herzegovina international slipping Negredo through with a slide-rule pass that he took in his stride before lifting over the onrushing Adrian with a stretching finish.

The beleaguered Hammers goalkeeper had made two fine saves prior to that—from David Silva and Samir Nasri, respectively—while there had also been a scare for Yaya Toure, who was briefly forced off the pitch after seeming to injury his knee while making a tackle.

But the midfielder was able to return to the action soon after, and it was he who would get the game’s third goal.

If the opening two goals hinted at West Ham’s defensive frailties, then it was the third that fully exposed them—and perhaps ended the tie in the process. Toure picked up the ball on the halfway line and was then able to run completely unchallenged all the way into the box before stopping on the ball and side-footing a shot at goal that Adrian was again unable to stop.

Coppa Italia

But then a Cup match is always different, and Roma manager Rudi Garcia is confident his side can overcome that heavy loss and advance to the semifinals in front of their own fans.    

"Our aim is to reach the semifinal," Garcia said on Monday. "We're not thinking about the league and our sole focus is on winning tomorrow.

"It's a one-off encounter and we have one sole aim: reaching the semifinal. If we want to get there, we'll need to put in a great performance."

Garcia has asked the home fans to get behind their team on Tuesday night and act as the proverbial 12th man when Juventus pay a visit.

"We'll be in front of a full house at the Olimpico and it will be a terrific atmosphere, comparable to the one we faced at Juventus Stadium, where it's easy to play with the support of the crowd," Garcia added. "The fans will be fired up and will get behind the team.

"We responded well to our defeat in Turin. It was important to win and we did just that against Sampdoria. The fixture list throws up bizarre occurrences and sees us back up against Juventus straightaway. I've got no doubts over my team, they give their all in every game."

Sampdoria was the team that Juventus beat at the weekend, for their 12th consecutive victory, with Fernando Llorente, Arturo Vidal and Paul Pogba scoring in a 4-2 win. Llorente urged his side to keep the foot on the pedal to ensure the winning streak doesn't end at 12.

"Our team is doing really well as we are -- we need to continue along this path. The important thing is winning, and we're doing that well," Llorente told the club's official website.

"It was important to win today [Saturday] and we've done it. Sampdoria proved difficult opposition and played a great game. They caused us some problems, and showed the strength they have in their ranks.

"Now it's time for the Coppa Italia. We'll be playing against very strong opposition in Rome."

Juventus playmaker extraordinaire Andrea Pirlo is expected to come back into the starting lineup after missing out against Sampdoria, but Garcia stressed on the importance of concentrating on their own game, rather than worrying too much about Juve's strengths.

"We can't just think about handling Pirlo, the danger can arrive from across the park," the Frenchman said. "But it's the same for Juventus, we've had many players on the scoresheet this season. 

"Pirlo is a world-class player and if he has a quiet day then all the better for us. But we need to stick to our game plan and be clinical and efficient. I hope we've saved a few goals for this one."

Nicky Wroe rifled home the goal which boosted Oxford as they aim to book an FA Cup clash with Town.

But the Yorkshireman can’t play in tonight’s third-round replay at home to Charlton, and will have to take a watching brief if the Us make it to the John Smith’s Stadium in round four on Saturday.

Born in Sheffield and a former Barnsley player, midfielder Wroe notched late on to clinch the 1-0 win at Wycombe which put Oxford seventh in League II.

But he is on loan from Preston and is cup-tied after playing for Walsall in round one, so won’t have the chance to take up where he left off tonight.

Wroe’s strike ended a run of five games without a win for Chris Wilder’s side, who threw away a two-goal lead in the initial third-round tie at Charlton.

And former Halifax chief Wilder said: “I thought all the players were getting back to where we were at before our blip over Christmas.

“I saw signs against Portsmouth, where every part of the game apart from the final third was good, and I definitely saw signs at Charlton and Wycombe.

“We stressed to the players it was important they played well but also that they got the right result, and they did that.”

Wilder is also without experienced former Reading and Stoke striker Dave Kitson, who has an ankle injury.

But both James Constable (nine) and ex-Oldham man Deane Smalley (seven) have been among the goals this season.

Oxford, who beat Gateshead and Wrexham in the first two rounds of the FA Cup, are aiming to avenge a 4-0 Capital One Cup first-round defeat by Charlton in August.

Chris Powell’s Addicks are without a win in four, and slipped to 21st in the Championship after losing 1-0 at Middlesbrough on Saturday.

They have already suffered two defeats at the John Smith’s Stadium this season – 3-2 in the Capital One Cup second round and 2-1 in the league.

Rhoys Wiggins is suspended after his red card against Boro, but Powell hopes his fellow defender Chris Solly will return after a knee problem.

Astrit Ajdarevic, the midfielder signed on loan from Standard Liege, made his debut from the bench on Saturday.

Powell, who has just marked the three-year milestone of his appointment by Charlton, believes the tide will soon turn for his team.

“We grew into the Middlesbrough game, but things just aren’t going for us,” he said. “We have to keep battling and give ourselves a fighting chance in each and every game.”
