NFL Second Round Playoffs

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Colin Kaepernick raced into the end zone, then pretended to rip open his shirt with both hands imitating Cam Newton’s Superman touchdown celebration.

Three years of frustration had come to a head.

‘‘Just a little shoutout,’’ Kaepernick said.

To whom?

‘‘I think you know the answer,’’ Kaepernick said with a grin.

Kaepernick said he ‘‘will never forget’’ that he was selected in the second round of the 2011 NFL draft, 35 spots behind Newton, the Heisman Trophy winner and the top pick that season.

On Sunday, he outplayed his quarterback counterpart, throwing one touchdown pass and running for another score as the San Francisco 49ers defeated the Carolina Panthers 23-10 to advance to the NFC title game for the third straight season.

Kaepernick completed 15 of 28 passes for 196 yards in the divisional playoff win, avenging his worst statistical performance of the season two months ago against the Panthers.

‘‘That’s not the first, nor will it be the last time somebody does that,’’ Newton said of Kaepernick’s copycat display before leaving the postgame podium.

Anquan Boldin had eight catches for 136 yards and Frank Gore ran for 84 yards on 17 carries for the 49ers (14-4), who will visit Seattle next Sunday looking for a return trip to the Super Bowl.

‘‘I think we’re the two teams that everybody was looking at from the beginning,’’ Kaepernick said. ‘‘It’s going to be a knockdown, drag-out game.’’

The 49ers will have their hands full.

San Francisco (14-4) split two games with the Seahawks this season, but lost 29-3 at CenturyLink Field in September.

The 49ers were missing receiver Michael Crabtree in that lopsided loss. Crabtree only had three catches for 26 yards against Carolina, but Boldin said he drew plenty of double teams that allowed him to get open.

‘‘That’s the great thing about our team — we have weapons all around,’’ Boldin said. ‘‘You try to take one guy out and you still have two or three guys left who can make big plays.’’

The 49ers held Newton in check, intercepting him twice and sacking him five times while stopping the Panthers (12-5) twice on the 1-yard line in the first half.

Newton finished with 267 yards passing and had 54 yards on 10 carries, but the Panthers only found the end zone once — on a 31-yard TD strike to Steve Smith.

It was a rough playoff debut for Newton.

Linebacker Ahmad Brooks stopped Newton on a fourth-down sneak early in the second. Later, Brooks vaulted over the line and past Newton — he was called for offsides, but the 49ers showed the Panthers it wouldn’t be easy.

‘‘Terrible ending to a great season,’’ Newton said.

Almost fittingly, he misfired into the end zone on the final play of the game.

Kaepernick was held to 91 yards passing, 16 yards rushing and sacked six times in the first meeting with Carolina, a 10-9 loss at Candlestick Park.

But he played efficient football Sunday.

‘‘We had to get settled down,’’ Kaepernick said. ‘‘We came out, they did some unorthodox things against us. We settled down, we got into our rhythm, we started making plays.’’

San Francisco led 13-10 at the half when Kaepernick scored midway through in the third quarter on a 4-yard touchdown run off a read option.

The Panthers couldn’t answer, failing to score in the second half.

The 49ers took a 13-10 lead into the locker room after Vernon Davis caught a 1-yard touchdown pass in the back of the end zone from Kaepernick with 5 seconds left in the first half.

Davis was initially ruled out of the end zone on a play where 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh raced on to the field, drawing a 15-yard penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct. Harbaugh said he wasn’t disputing the catch, but rather that the play clock continued to run after the play.

All turned out fine for the 49ers though, as officials overturned the call ruling Davis dragged his left foot and scored.

Television replays showed the 49ers had 12 men in the huddle with backup tight end Vance McDonald racing to the sidelines before the ball was snapped. Referee Carl Cheffers defended the call telling a pool reporter the ball hadn’t been spotted — although Fox television replays seem to indicate otherwise.

Carolina spotted San Francisco a 6-0 lead with two defensive penalties — an unnecessary roughness on safety Mike Mitchell and a headbutt on cornerback Captain Munnerlyn — leading to field goals.

NOTES: It’s the second time since 2008 the Panthers lost at home in the divisional playoffs after winning the NFC South and claiming a first-round bye with the No. 2 seed. ... 49ers FB Will Tukuafu left with a leg injury in the first half and didn’t return.

COLTS Vs PATRIOTS

The Colts–Patriots rivalry is a rivalry that is considered one of the most famous in the NFL.[2] The two teams combined for four Super Bowl victories (three by the Patriots) and seven AFC Championships since 2001, while both are noted for their organizational excellence.[2]
The nature of this rivalry is somewhat ironic because while the Colts and Patriots were AFC East division rivals from 1970–2001 (dating back to the Colts' time in Baltimore), their intensified enmity wasn't prevalent until Indianapolis was moved into the newly formed AFC South following the 2001 season as part of the NFL's realignment.[2] Since 2003, the rivalry has been bitterly close: following New England's 59-24 win in 2012 the Patriots lead the series with eight wins (two in the playoffs) versus five wins (one playoff) for the Colts, and the Patriots hold a lead in points scored, 368-329.
The modern matchup spanning the period of 1998–2013 was usually headlined as a contest between quarterbacks Peyton Manning and Tom Brady, who together won six NFL MVP awards in eight years (2003–10; four by Manning). In September 2001 Brady received his first start against the Colts after an injury to then-starter Drew Bledsoe, and proceeded to defeat the Colts in his first six games against them in the next years, including the 2003 AFC Championship Game and a 2004 AFC Divisional playoff game. The 2004 Divisional game was notable as the Patriots held a record breaking Colts offense to 3 points on snowy cold night in Foxborough. The Colts won the next three matches, notching two regular season victories and a win in the 2006 AFC Championship Game on the way to their win in Super Bowl XLI. Since then, the Patriots have won the four out of the next six games from 2007–12. The quarterback angle of the rivalry changed in 2012 with the surge to success of Colts rookie Andrew Luck.

The Patriots (12-4) earned a first-round bye with the No. 2 seed in the AFC. Unfortunately, the team wasn't able to get healthy during its time off considering inside linebacker Brandon Spikes was placed on injured reserve with a knee injury, as reported by the team's website.

New England has been devastated by injuries all year long, but somehow, some way, Bill Belichick has managed to win games with the guys who have stayed healthy.

The Colts reached the divisional round thanks to one of the most remarkable come-from-behind victories in the history of the playoffs. Andrew Luck led his team to a 45-44 win with a furious 35-point second-half flurry of offense, overcoming a 28-point deficit in the process.

SAINTS Vs SEAHAWKS

Seahawks 24, Saints 20: Do I think the Saints have more of a shot to topple Seattle this time around? No doubt. But like my pick last week, when I took the Saints over the Eagles, I'm going with who I think is the better team. That's the Seahawks.

Katherine Terrell, Saints beat writer
Saints 28, Seahawks 27: Call me crazy on this one. The logical choice is the Seahawks after their 34-7 dismantling of the Saints earlier this season. And as Jahri Evans put it "this is not the Eagles we're playing this week." But I'm feeling a little more confident about the Saints' chances after watching them get over their road woes last week. I think if the Saints can keep running the ball effectively and contain Russell Wilson, they can come out with a victory.

Terrance Harris, Staff writer
Seahawks 35, Saints 24: The Saints will invariably play the Seahawks closer than in their last meeting, but it won't be good enough to change their fortunes. With the run game leading to play-action passes, Jimmy Graham, Marques Colston and Darren Sproles will be able to get open downfield. But the Saints' injury-riddled secondary will not be able to hold up against Golden Tate, Doug Baldwin and Percy Harvin. Quarterback Russell Wilson will use his legs to buy time and find open receivers with ease.

Marcus Carmouche, Sports manager
Seahawks 27, Saints 16: The Saints are a prideful bunch, so don't expect a performance similar to their regular-season trip to the Pacific Northwest. But all the elements - crowd noise, inclement weather, long road trip, rested Seahawks - are conspiring against them. Yes, the game will be closer. The end result, however, will be the same.

Nick Foles started 10 games for Philadelphia this season, throwing 27 touchdowns and just two interceptions being intercepted just twice. Now, he faces a vastly improved New Orleans defense, whose front four has have applied heavy pressure to opposing passers.
Foles and Saints quarterback Drew Brees attended the same high school in Austin, Texas, although the 34-year-old Brees is 10 years older.
Despite winning seven of their final eight games, the Eagles would have missed the playoffs had they not beaten Dallas in a winner-take-all finale for the NFC East crown.
“I think going back to when we were 3-5 has kind of been the same situation for us, but we have not spent any time talking about dealing with anything differently,” said Kelly, the first rookie coach in Eagles history to win a division title. in his debut season. “We know last week’s game, we lose to Dallas, we go home. So it’s the exact same situation we are in this week.”
Road kill
As tough as they are in the Superdome, the Saints are a different team on the road. They are 1-5 away from home since Oct. 13, and the franchise is 0-5 in road playoff games under coaches Sean Payton (0-3), Jim Haslett (0-1) and Jim Mora (0-1). Of course, That doesn’t count winning the Super Bowl on a neutral field in Miami.
50/50 proposition
Payton was asked this week about people who have compared Kelly to “a young Sean Payton.”
Actually, both coaches are 50, and Payton is a month younger than the Eagles coach.
“First off, I feel like you are piling it on. I just turned 50,” Payton joked with reporters this week. “I take offense to that.”
Payton did concede, however, that Kelly’s innovative style was somewhat reflective of his own.
“Obviously, the system he is familiar with and what he was very successful with at ¿  Oregon, he has applied to his talent in Philadelphia,” the Saints coach said. “I think the first sign of good coaching is taking the pieces you have and building a system around that, and I think he has done that extremely well.”.....

W.a.t.c.h NFL playoffs: Chiefs Vs Colts Live Stream Online/

Something will have to give when the Indianapolis Colts and the Kansas City Chiefs meet in an AFC wild-card playoff game at Lucas Oil Stadium on Saturday.

The Chiefs have lost seven straight playoff games, tying them for the longest playoff losing streak in NFL history. The Colts have lost three straight wild-card playoff games.

This is the second time the teams will meet in a three-game period. The Colts, who are on a three-game winning streak, beat the Chiefs 23-7 at Arrowhead Stadium on Dec. 22.

ESPN.com Colts reporter Mike Wells and Chiefs reporter Adam Teicher break down the matchup.

Teicher: The Colts were wobbling coming into Kansas City a couple of weeks ago but seem to have righted themselves that day. What can you point to as the reasons?

Kansas City Chiefs at Indianapolis Colts
Saturday, 4:35 p.m. ET
PickCenter

Which team will win this matchup?

Wells: Most fans would say it's because of quarterback Andrew Luck. Don't get me wrong, Luck has been as good as expected, but the change has been led by the defense. The Colts have 12 sacks and have forced eight turnovers, including four against the Chiefs in Week 16, during their three-game winning streak. That's where Luck and the offense come in. You give Luck a short field to work with, and the odds are pretty good that he'll lead the Colts to a score. They scored a quick 17 points in the first quarter against Jacksonville last week.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid decided to rest most of his starters against San Diego in the finale. Do you think that was the right thing to do?

Teicher: Undoubtedly. The Chiefs didn’t get a bye in the playoffs, but Reid created one for eight defensive and seven offensive starters who didn’t play against the Chargers. I would expect that to be reflected in how those guys play against the Colts. Momentum going into the playoffs is overrated. The NFL is such a week-to-week deal that it’s almost impossible for a team to carry anything over from one game to the next, and even at that, the starters were able to get in some practice time last week. Not that this is a huge thing with the playoffs beginning, but the Chiefs got a good look at some of their backups under game conditions against an opponent that needed to win. In several cases, they liked what they saw.

Donald Brown was the Colts’ playmaker against the Chiefs a couple of weeks ago. He obviously is fast and has more power than you would think by looking at him. Why don’t the Colts use him more as their featured back and why did they trade for Trent Richardson?

Wells: Brown took over the starting spot from Richardson against Tennessee on Dec. 1 because Richardson was having a difficult time finding a rhythm. I still think the Colts made the right move in trading for Richardson, because Brown has been inconsistent for most of his five seasons with the Colts up until now. Richardson is still the future for the Colts; they have no intention of parting ways with him after the season. They still envision him and Luck having a great future together. And Brown said it best earlier this week, “There are only a handful of teams that only use one running back. We’re going to need two, three running backs to get through the playoffs.”

Speaking of running backs, it looked like Jamaal Charles was going to have a huge game against the Colts (not that 106 yards is a bad game) after the first series. He ended up with only 13 carries. How come the team’s best player didn’t have more carries or more catches, for that matter?

Chiefs at Colts: Stat of the Week
4
The number of victories the Colts have against teams in the playoffs this season. They've beaten San Francisco, Seattle, Denver and Kansas City.

Teicher: Reid messed up that one and he beat himself up for it afterward. You can count on that not happening again this time around. Charles was given the ball 18 times (13 carries, five receptions) against the Colts two weeks ago. That actually wasn’t a season low for him. He had 16 touches (and a monster game) the week before in Oakland and 18 touches in two other games (both Chiefs losses). Another thing to remember is the Chiefs had only 53 offensive plays against the Colts, their second-lowest total of the season. They didn’t have the normal amount of opportunities to get him the ball. But whether or not the Chiefs have a limited amount of snaps on Saturday, they will get him the ball more often. He’s their best offensive player, so they’re making a huge mistake if they don’t.

Linebacker Jerrell Freeman is another player who had a big game for the Colts when they played against the Chiefs. Has he had other games like that this season? Give us a little scouting report on his strengths and weaknesses.

Wells: You have to credit Colts general manager Ryan Grigson for finding Freeman. Grigson is known for finding players in different parts of the world. He’d probably go to Antarctica to scout if there were a football team there. Freeman is a former Canadian Football League player. He led the Colts in tackles as a rookie and would be the team’s defensive MVP if not for a player named Robert Mathis. Freeman reached double figures in tackles in 12 of the 16 games this season. He has no problem being matched up against a running back out of the backfield, a tight end or even a wide receiver if he has to, because he’s athletic enough to defend them. An argument could be made that Freeman deserved a Pro Bowl nod.
